hey, I'm Dr. mamie
I was exhausted, even though I was sleeping 9-10 hours every night. I had brain fog that made it much more difficult to work. My periods got heavier and more painful. And I felt depressed and unmotivated.
Initially, I blamed my symptoms on the mentally, physically, and energetically taxing academic program that I’d just finished, as well as the fact that the world had been turned upside down by COVID — and now I was in the middle of starting a new healthcare practice.
Stress has a HUGE impact on health! So it didn’t strike me as odd that I would need more sleep, that my hormones would be out of whack, or that I would feel brain foggy. I just needed to let my body rest and recover.
In July 2020, I graduated with a Master’s in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Later that month, I moved from Austin, Texas back to my hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, and I settled into a rental home.
At first I thought it was increased freckling or "age spots," and I didn’t think too much about it. But as the darker spots grew larger and started to join together and form patches on my cheeks and forehead, I realized what was going on...
I had melasma!!
I had NO interest in using topical chemicals, peels, or lasers, and the thought of avoiding the sun for the rest of my life made me cry! (Seriously!) Plus who wants to have to wear makeup every day because of their skin? NO ONE!
Because of my extensive training as a naturopathic doctor (ND), I knew that my melasma wasn't just a skin issue — it was a sign of deeper imbalances. And I was determined to figure out what those were and FIX them!
It’s been a long journey of prioritizing nourishing foods, implementing lifestyle strategies that heal, detoxing my body, addressing my gut microbiome, overcoming mold illness (it turned out there was black mold in that rental house), taking time to reduce stress, and more. And I'm still healing...
I’ve learned SO MUCH along the way about what causes melasma and — more importantly — how to truly address it!

Melasma is not just a skin issue — it's a reflection of what's going on inside your body!
