I was exhausted, even though I was sleeping 9-10 hours every night. I had brain fog that made it much more difficult to work. My periods got heavier and more painful. And I felt depressed and unmotivated.

Initially, I blamed my symptoms on the mentally, physically, and energetically taxing academic program that I’d just finished, as well as the fact that the world had been turned upside down by COVID — and now I was in the middle of starting a new healthcare practice.

Stress has a HUGE impact on health! So it didn’t strike me as odd that I would need more sleep, that my hormones would be out of whack, or that I would feel brain foggy. I just needed to let my body rest and recover. 


over the next several months, i noticed my health decline.

In July 2020, I graduated with a Master’s in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Later that month, I moved from Austin, Texas back to my hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, and I settled into a rental home.


My melasma journey started after I moved back to Arkansas.

by november, I was noticing changes to the skin on my face.

At first I thought it was increased freckling or "age spots," and I didn’t think too much about it. But as the darker spots grew larger and started to join together and form patches on my cheeks and forehead, I realized what was going on...

I had melasma!!

By the time spring 2021 rolled around, the melasma had worsened — and so had my self-esteem.

I wanted to hide! Of course I looked at all the info online, and I saw the same “solutions” you’ve seen:
  • Topical medications, peels, or lasers that can lighten your skin…but the melasma often comes back, and the treatments can actually make your hyperpigmentation worse
  • Avoid the sun like a vampire, apply sunscreen every few hours forevermore, and don't go anywhere without a hat
  • Hide it with a bunch of makeup

I had NO interest in using topical chemicals, peels, or lasers, and the thought of avoiding the sun for the rest of my life made me cry! (Seriously!) Plus I don’t wear makeup most days, so that didn’t feel like an answer either!  

I wasn't okay with any of that!
